SiloSolve AS – bacterial inoculant for Aerobic Stability
SiloSolve® AS is a combination of fast growing and competitive lactic acid bacteria and a unique strain of L. buchneri. The lactic acid bacteria dominate and control the fermentation while the L. buchneri provides a controlled level of acetic acid. This combination shows an improved fermentation profile as well as the ability to inhibit yeast and mold growth resulting in improved aerobic stability at feed out.
Aerobic stability is critical, since the presence of oxygen leads to the growth of yeasts and molds. Yeasts and molds are a cause of aerobic instability resulting in nutrient losses and unpalatable feed – and feeding aerobically unstable feed may reduce feed intake, growth and milk production. Additionally, certain molds produce harmful mycotoxins which reduce intake further as well as pose a risk to animal wellbeing. Economically, feed costs increase through dry matter losses and increased refusals. So while most farmers experience some heating of silage due largely to the growth of yeast and mold, good management, including proper compaction will help. However, fungal growth is frequently connected to crop types that can be challenging to ensile.
While it is important to have a rapid pH reduction after sealing the silo, it is equally important to maintain a low pH value after opening the silo. In trials, SiloSolve® AS improved aerobic stability and maintained a lower pH even after aerobic exposure. SiloSolve® AS is very effective in improving aerobic stability and reducing growth of yeast and mold in a variety of crops. Forages ensiled with SiloSolve® AS are more stable than untreated silage on a variety of crops.
Targeted crops include those with high sugar and low protein, ensiled at low moisture.
